Kinilaw & Buko
Adjoined via an enticing black curtain to 100 Hoxton is a dark and cosy joint doing two things: Filipino tapas (Kinilaw); and Filipino ice cream (Buko). Lit by candles, soundtracked by soul, and downright intimate, it's got a relaxing lounge vibe to it; the type of location you might stop off intending on having a quick bite and end up staying until the staff politely tell you they have homes to go to. The kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche that goes big on the vinegar, are all tapas dishes made for sharing. We did the business on the majority of the menu (we wore our waistband pants) and found sharp flavours and no little comfort. Not everything was a hit (the squid), but the pork belly was moreishly rich and the bream mango was fiery, fresh and nicely distinct. Just don't neglect the buko side of the operation - ostensibly really nice ice cream with Filipino flavours (red bean ice cream, purple yam and coconut sorbet...), they're creamy but not overly sweet and act as the perfect tonic.
