The Dulwich Bakery
Well this sure as hell blows the Sainsbury's in-store bakery right out the water. The Dulwich Bakery is a bread wonderland – they do spelt, olive, rye, walnut, just to name a few. Walking in and smelling freshly-baked goodies here is just too good to describe. Their stunning cakes and hefty pies are local legends too, and they whip up a mean smoothie to boot. Some of the breads aren't cheap, but you're paying for quality here.
** UNPUBLISHED 12/06/17 -- PERMANENTLY CLOSED The go-to spot for your morning pastry and coffee in SW6, Halva is that neighbourhood, artisan bakery worth talking about. Everything you see in here, from the fresh breads to the colourful fruit tarts, is made on-site, while these good people even won a gold medal for their baguettes at the world bread awards. Yes, that's a thing. Birthday cakes and macaroon towers can be made to order if you've got a shin-dig or wedding on the horizon. The use of seasonal ingredients ensures the tarts here are always the freshest. You won't find a better pain au chocolat this side of the Channel so do yourself a favour and get a move on.
Melrose & Morgan
A kind of one-stop shop for all things local, Melrose and Morgan is both a grocery shop and a kitchen. Sixty percent of food is made by their in-house team of chefs. The shop itself is really satisfying in terms of its presentation. Try not to buy everything.
Artisan Gluten Free Bakery
**Unpublished on Oct. 12 b/c closed** Gluten-free Mecca is here, so leave your intolerances at the door because they're not getting a look in. The folk here have perfected gluten-free bread in all its forms - from baguettes to sun-dried tomato loaves, and they're all pretty damn special. The pastries were a bit dry though, gotta say. There are full English brekkies here with GF sausages that everyone was on when we went. The pancakes were top too. If you didn't know the food here was GF, you wouldn't be able to tell. Dedicated gluten-free bakery turning out pastries, cakes and savouries.
