This little square is a veritable haven in the hectic, high-rise badlands of Vauxhall. But how did it escape development? Well it's a pretty nice story actually so listen up. In the 1980s a bunch of the buildings were acquired for demolition (they were going to be made into a school). They were left empty for ages, filled with squatters, and eventually a housing co-op campaigned for the management of the empty houses and green space - they even opened Bonnington Cafe - where bargain veggie food still feeds the locals today. On a hot summer's day the shady nooks of Bonnington Square and its gardens are where it's at. You can even order breakfast from Italo cafe and have them bring it to you on the grass. With heavy changes to the surrounding area, this spot won't be about forever - so we'd go soon if we were you.
