Tucked away on a corner of Newington Green, Bergen House is just how we'd like every bistro to be. It's softly lit; with comforting, sumptuous selects on the menu; comfy, red-leather booths; and an open plan kitchen where the chefs hustle under the gregarious gaze of a bougie Stokey crowd sipping on something strong. Serving British sharing plates paired with an affordable wine list, it makes for an ideal Friday or Saturday night choice when you've got nowhere special to be and can just kick back and eat, letting the significance of time disappear completely. The menu is big and extensive: there are large sharing options like the beef wellington or fish pie; their staple 'banging' steak with fries and plenty of smaller sharing plates. Stuff like cod and salmon croquettes; lemon and parsley arancini balls; baked camembert with artisan bread; and prawns and garlic in chilli sauce. Shit, just typing that stuff out has us salivating. Choose a few, grab a bottle of wine and treat yourself to something very tasty in a refined, bougie bistro.
