Of all the discoveries from Brian Shimkovitz's Awesome Tapes from Africa project, Hailu Mergia is perhaps the most prominent. The keyboard and accordion maestro was part of legendary group Walias Band, played with jazz vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke and has a rare, distinct groove to his music that's pretty much impossible to dislike.
His first new material in two decades came out this year in the form of new album Lala Belu, and it's a beautifully rhythmic record, with a jazzy organ taking centre stage over some straightforward drums. If you're up for some native pop melodies and soulful instruments, you'll dig it. Opening the show on the night will be Krar Collective, who serve up a colourful feast of Ethiopian grooves.
