Jodi Dean: Capitalism is the End of the World
As children of an advanced economy and employees of a smart-phone-based publication, we have plenty to thank capitalism for. Which makes reckoning with the undeniable horrors of global self-interest all the more conflicting. The systematic and repeated destruction of communities, cultures and the natural world sometimes makes it feel like capitalism is the conveyor belt leading us towards the end of the world. These ideas were at the forefront of British theorist Mark Fisher’s work before he passed away last year and will be up for discussion at his memorial lecture at Goldsmiths. Jodi Dean, Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and author of The Communist Horizon will be discussing Fisher’s theories through a Marxist lens and hopefully providing a viable solution. One which leaves room for smart-phone-based publications, of course.
