Gillian Wearing & Claude Cahun
Who are you? What's you and what's a mask? It's a pretty hard question to tackle and one that links two artists from different generations brought together for this show: the French surrealist artist Claude Cahun (1894-1954) and British YBA artist Gillian Wearing (b.1963). On the one hand you've got Cahun: photographed in multiple guises, with a shaven head, with cloaks and masks on, cross-dressed or bleach haired. On the other, Wearing who dons silicon masks, wigs and prosthetics to become Warhol in drag, Diane Arbus and Robert Mapplethorpe. Both these artists have a fascination with the fluid nature of gender and identity, of dressing up and hiding behind a mask. Prepare for some self-reflection as self-image goes under the microscope.
